I use a lot of vintage and antique textiles in my housewares, so I’ve removed thousands of those rust and yellow colored stains from doilies, linens, and lace. Personally, I think the three best stain fighters for delicates are cream of tartar, lemon juice and Oxiclean. 
Sometimes I use all three for tough stains! Mix a couple teaspoons of each in a bowl of warm water and soak smaller pieces for 30 minutes. Agitate with a spoon or your hands, rinse with warm water and hang to dry. For larger linens, fill your washer with warm water and add 1/4 cup lemon juice, cream of tartar and Oxiclean. Let it agitate to mix and then stop the washer from proceeding through the cycle (this won’t work with front loaders). Add the linens or lace and soak for 30 minutes before starting the washer again on the delicate cycle. Hang to dry.

That’s a great idea! I’ve never tried it before, but there is no reason why you couldn’t just add a small amount of water to the powder and apply it to the stains directly. My only advice would be to wet the stains with hot water first and make sure it sits a while before putting it in your front loader to really work at the problem, especially for very old rust stains.
Why Would you use hot water?It would set the stain,would it not?
Make the thick paste and apply it with a paint brush to the stain. Let the fabric sit in direct sunlight until the paste has dried and then just brush it off.
