When we moved into our house three years ago, our landlord at the time asked us to keep his giant Mexican cabinet in the house that we absolutely didn’t need. I loved it, don’t get me wrong, but it was useless as a storage piece and didn’t fit visually in the house. It was just way too clunky for the space. When we bought the house last summer, I finally had my chance to move it outside and rethink our entryway! Our house has NO storage…I repeat…NO STORAGE. We have one and half closets total so figuring out a way to store toys, shoes and bags was quite the challenge. Here’s what we did.

BEFORE: It’s a lovely piece, but way to big for the space.

BEFORE: This is facing the front door. The cabinet was so big that it cut off half of the front window!

AFTER: Two “Nornas” Ikea storage pieces fit SO many toys and all of our grocery bags. Two coat trees are perfect for when we have big parties or for our diaper bags for everyday use.

I moved my string art from our art gallery wall because it was a better fit above the credenza. The vase is from Anthropologie. The fun new woven rug is from Overstock.

Now that the cabinet is gone, the window brightens the room up a lot more!

I made a simple cushion for the top of the bench using a vintage textile from the flea market.
Here’s a quick video of how I made the bench cushion. You probably noticed that we got a new sofa! I’ll share the living room “spruce up” as well soon!
This looks great! We just bought a house and I want to set up a similar “mudroom” area like this in the corner by the door.
You did a great job on the entryway – It looks so nice!
Loved the video – “Cute baby interlude.” lol
