To say that George loves all things kitchen related would be a ridiculous understatement. He doesn’t just like “playing” kitchen…he likes using the real stuff, carefully stirring at the stove, watching every single step and trying it out himself. He even sort of non-verbally lures new guests or friends to lift him onto the counter near the mixer so he can touch it for a while (since he knows Jeff and I won’t). Obsessed would be a better word to use.
Since George is still mostly non-verbal, we had to guess what theme would be best for his birthday and “cooking” popped into my head as a fun thing for all kids to do! Here’s how we pulled it off:
When guests entered, they gave their pizza order to me or my mom and then headed outside. I made tiny party sized chef hats out of butcher paper and copy paper!
We par-baked the individual crusts and had the toppings out for everyone to choose from. Pre-cooking the toppings helps keep the oven time down to a minimum as well.
While the kids played, I assembled the mini pizzas! The party was too early for catering or for pizza delivery, so this was our best idea!
I tucked pieces of foil with the guests’ names on them for easier delivery.
Outside, the kids got to decorate their own chef apron with fabric markers and pens.
George preferred drawing on the table.
The aprons I found were the perfect size for all ages of kids.
Next was the cookie decorating table. I set out squeeze tubes of colored icing, plain sugar cookie shapes, and lots of different sprinkles.
The cake was a homemade funfetti vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. I topped it with a toy mixer and some toy kitchen utensils. The sprinkles are pouring out of a measuring cup and down the side the cake!
The party favor was a tiny jar of cookie mix with a small wooden spoon and recipe card. It was the perfect size for a child to make on their own with a little help and served about 2 people.
This might be the last year that I get to choose the theme myself…luckily we are having another boy in October so I can start all over again with him! What are your favorite birthday party themes?
