I’ve been away on vacation in Hawaii, taking a little break from blogging, making stuff for the store and nervously awaiting the next issue this year may bring. Before getting back into groceries, cooking, baking, making and fixing, I thought I’d share some of our photos in case you’re vacationing there soon or just want to live vicariously through us!
- SUPERB Indian food off the road to Hana in Maui.
- A stop on the road to Hana in Maui. Quintessential wild chickens, local food, and the honor system for purchasing.
- The waves around Kauai were angry and awesome!
- Wailua Falls
- Piles of fishing nets neatly stored until morning
- A beautiful beach in Kauai where the sugar factories used to dump equipment. The bright rusty bits seem to melt into and meld with the black lava rocks.
- Delicious shave ice. Finely shaved ice, almost like powder, drizzled with tropical flavors and piled atop a small mound of macadamia nut ice cream. Sort of tastes like a tropical version of the orange creamsicle!
- Our one touristy moment: THE LUAU
- Sacrifice the virgin!
- Fire dancer
- One of MANY mai tais
- Yeah, we can just look at it…I don’t need to go in. Really.
- Our first hike: 5 miles round trip to a great view of Waimea Canyon
- Beginning of our second hike: 9 miles to the swamp and back. The change in scenery and weather was fantastic.
- The end of the our second hike: The highest swamp in the world and 20 degrees cooler!
- They were like the pigeons and rats of Kauai! Seriously, the cuteness really wears off after awhile.
LOVE Hawaii. I have not been to Kauai and when I do finally go, I know that feral chickens will probably frighten me.
And why do they call it shave ice and not shaved ice when it is, in fact, shaved ice? Discuss.
I don’t know! And they are SO specific about it being “shave” and not “shaved”….to me, it sounds like I’m reading the instructions off the back of a chopsticks wrapper. Wait a sec…is it possible that since the Japanese brought this to Hawaii, that it is actually “shaved ice” with an Japanese accent?
Oh no! It’s totally possible.
I think you solved the mystery single-hand!
(I’m perpetuating this even further….)
I’m pretty sure we have a photo of us under that waterfall. Hana was so cool. When we went that time we got to drive the loop around the whole side of the island. After Hana it was like the moon. The next time we went you weren’t allowed to drive that anymore.
Yeah, Hana was awesome, but we were too scared to try to drive the remaining loop! The rental car wasn’t exactly suited for rough road…;-)
And I have to say, as much as I want to see the rest of the islands, I think our next trip there will be back to Kauai to do the Kalalau Trail. It sounds amazing!
