I can’t stop making little hats!! I’m officially obsessed, but as an Aquarius, I’m sure a new obsession will take over by Monday 🙂

the moment you’ve all been waiting for…
Here are the photos of the finished apartment! It took about two months to complete, with a few projects to go. We still want to insulate and recover the space between the ceiling beams, paint the outside door, insulate the garage door and make a garden on our roof, but until then, our apartment is officially done.
As I was getting this ready to post, we found out that our main drain pipe is broken and they will have to break apart a section of our floor to fix it, so I’ll keep you posted on the damage and repair and any other home improvement projects that we take on.
I took a lot of photos because I don’t have a wide angle lens so this was the best way to do the tour. It might take awhile to get through them, but I hope you enjoy the transformation!
- The window back down to the apartment.
- Back of the roof
- View of the Williamsburg bridge
- Our roof, soon to be garden.
- This skylight opens up so you can go outside.
- The cats love the last step before the skylight for bird watching!
- Ladder that leads up to the roof.
- The apartment from above.
- I hung a gray curtain around the upper room that now functions as the cat room and storage area. Out of sight, out of mind.
- When you peer into this Areaware mirror, the cutout moose antlers line up with your head perfectly.
- The funny bathroom was the perfect place for our Jesus collection.
- Urban Outfitters just came out with a large version of this DIY deer head and I’m wishing I had it to go next to this small one!
- A text on the wall.
- We decided to make this the humorous bathroom with bold color and quirky elements.
- Just past the pantry on the other side of the kitchen is the half bathroom.
- My new favorite thing from Ikea: A vanity mirror printed with a lace border! So cute and so cheap!
- The exposed beams with the rag rug and gas lamp fixtures really work in this lodge-like atmosphere.
- View of the dressing room
- We got yet another Ikea cabinet for all of our toiletries instead of a medicine cabinet.
- View into the toilet area
- I used to hate having to be in this bathroom, but now it’s a fun little space to unwind.
- We took this bathroom into sort of an “Old Russian Spa” or “Log Cabin Steam Room” direction with the bench and towel hooks.
- By tearing down a wall and sliding door, the dressing room now connects seamlessly with the bathroom.
- Doorway to the master bathroom
- View of the apartment from behind the island.
- I drilled holes in the back of this cabinet for the appliance plugs. You CAN make Ikea furniture work for you.
- This unit from Ikea hides away our microwave and dishes, which visually cleans up the kitchen.
- Up above the kitchen, we have the beginnings of a little garden.
- Everything has its place and it’s easy to access.
- These drawer organizers are great from Ikea.
- We put together two units and a raw wood table top from Ikea to form our island.
- This old farm table is perfect for my baking area.
- I’m much happier with the chalkboard wall than the original blue because it is a more subtle background for the pops of color.
- View of the kitchen from the living room
- Little model people peek out from a glass lightbulb planter. I’m so happy that mini gardens are in these days, because they add a little humor to a place.
- These chicken wire birds were an amazing gift and I love them hovering over our porcelain mixed nuts.
- I love this little metal folding table from Urban Outfitters. It’s chic and really cheap!
- I like being able to hide our TV when we have company
- I saw books organized by color in a magazine and in real life at my friend Jeff’s place. I loved it, so I took it one step further and color organized my sculptural elements too.
- The orange in the pillows matching the orange in the wall was actually a happy accident
- Gallery wall and stairs to the upper area
- Living Room
- This will eventually be the bar, when we actually buy all the liquor!
- I found that I already had a lot of white things that now look really cool against the white walls. They just become texture instead of specific things.
- Finally a real office!
- My office wall of supplies. These shelves from Ikea look great in the space and you can add as many drawers or doors as you like.
- Dining Room
- We are so happy to have a nice big table for dinner parties. We made it out of two tops from Ikea and some saw horse legs from Urban Outfitters.
- When you walk out of the bedrooms and turn left, this is the view of the rest of the apartment
- Looking back to the master bedroom from the guest bed
- This beautiful gilded wallpaper was a Christmas gift from Jeff. So fun!
- We used one side of this small closet for our utility closet and the other is for guest clothes and extra blankets
- We were able to use our old TV for the guest room so our friends can watch movies during extended stays
- The guest room
- I simplified my collection of picture frames by spraying them all the same color
- The backs of the closets became our bedroom wall
- Beyond the master bedroom is the guest room, separated by these great curtains from Ikea
- Our classic bed looks great in this industrial space and way less stuffy now.
- “Doorway” to the bedrooms
- As you walk past the closets, there is a “doorway” between them and my office shelves to the bedrooms
- Foyer reverse view and front door
- LOVE our Ikea closets. Lots of storage space and perfectly organized!
- My beautiful bike fits perfectly in the “foyer”
- Funny little lego chairs finally have a home
- Entryway from the front door
- Welcome.

MISSION: Day 3
Here is what I worked on yesterday. I failed in my promise to update daily, but in my defense, I got some bad news about our plumbing yesterday.

one last disaster, or so we thought…
I’ve mentioned floods several times in these posts, but haven’t gone into specifics about any them, so let me quickly explain before I talk about the big one. We have a drain on our roof that sends rain water from up there, down through a large pipe that is inside the apartment on one wall. That water goes into our main drain along with all the sink or shower or toilet water. There are also two holes in the floor, one is an old pipe opening and one is a drain in the bedroom area. Most of the floods in the beginning involved one of the toilets overflowing in the back of the apartment, and draining all the way into that area in the bedroom because there is a slight slant to the floor. This was a lot of water because it went really far, but at least it went somewhere (into that drain). We had Roto-Rooter come a few separate times to snake the drain in the floor and everything seemed fine for a few days or weeks.
Then one fateful day, there was a huge snow storm and the roof was covered. We woke up the next morning and Jeff put his hand to the floor to get his phone to check the time and it was floating in water. My brain started to function in that sluggish morning way, and I began to realize that our bed was surrounded by 3 inches of water. The water was coming from the pipe hole in the floor and it was no longer draining into that drain in our bedroom. It wasn’t going anywhere. As the snow melted on the roof, more water flowed into the apartment because of a blockage in the pipe. Jeff spent the whole day away from work, waiting for the plumber to come, sucking water out in a shop vac as it steadily came up from the pipe. They finally came, they fixed it, and everything has been dandy until today.
Now, we know the signs of a major flood on its way, and when we think something might happen, we check to see if water is in the pipe in the floor. If it is, then things aren’t draining properly. I noticed there was some in there, so we called Roto-Rooter again and the guy that came basically told me we no longer have our 6 month guarantee because something much worse must be wrong. He has suggested that we have them send a camera through the drain to see if it is cracked, broken or separated and allowing dirt to pile up in the pipe. If it is, my landlord would have to tear up the cement floor about 3 feet down to fix it and then pour concrete again over it. In other words, we would have to move. No decision has been made, but I will say that a huge rain storm is coming at the end of the week and I’m not feeling great about all of this right now.

MISSION “Get Out of Creative Funk”

This was the last time I was in a funk and had a rule to work on 5 things a day, no matter what. I ended up sketching freely from animal photography and coming up with some great images for linocut prints of animals. Hoping for inspiration again!
Sometimes when I can’t come up with anything to make (or am uninspired to do so) for my online store, I make funny little rules for myself to help get out of the funk. Rules like, make 5 things a day no matter how small or, I have to make small things for 4 hours, do yoga, eat lunch and then work on longer term projects for 5. It’s worked for me in the past, and eventually I get out of the funk because it forces me to loosen up a bit, so I’m going to try it again. You can follow the progress in the MAKE section of the blog. I will update at the end of each day. Hopefully, by writing this, I will feel even more responsible to complete the mission.
The rule for this round of creative funk: I have to make 2 things to sell a day and work on 3 others.
Wish me luck!

getting closer
Eventually, less horrible things happened daily with the loft. We started calling it an “apartment” rather than “the garage” and the list had less big projects and more little tedious things that were welcomed by me as a much-needed change. I was ready to figure out where to put that giant toothbrush from a 1950’s dentist’s office and too beat to do anything else. It was great. But in case you were sort of enjoying the drama of it all, don’t worry, we still have two pretty huge disasters coming your way soon… and a gleaming recommendation for Roto-Rooter. 🙂
- hot pink door for the half bath
- I had this hot pink paint, so I decided to use it!
- Finally, the cats stopped hiding all day.
- One of our roof leaks ended up being dripping condensation from a water pipe, so Jeff insulated it to stop it.
- You can see the curtains separating the bedrooms just beyond my office “wall”
- I sewed two Ikea curtains together to make really long ones and hung them to cover the fuse boxes and separate the bedrooms.
- So much stuff to figure out!
- When you have no money, you have to keep your sense of humor!
- We formed an island out of two cabinets and a raw wood table top from Ikea. I’m loving having a big, open kitchen!
- We bought these great cabinets from Ikea for the kitchen. They look like vintage red cross stuff and go perfectly with the chalkboard wall!
- Finally our real bed!
- we finally moved our bed from this upper area to the “bedroom”
- Finally we bought, painted and hung a door for the bathroom! I love it in there!
- The dressing room started to come together, but we still didn’t have a door for the main bathroom…
- Though other things were getting more civilized, we were still living out of a pile of clothes, unsure of what was clean or dirty!
