Coming up with activities for any shower can be a humongous headache, especially if you want to do something you know the guest of honor hasn’t seen a million times at other showers. I love this scrapbook idea for a bridal shower because it doubles as a fun activity and sentimental gift! Continue reading

Cheap and Cheery- Clothespin Card Holders
I’m planning two baby showers right now, so I was thrilled when I came up with an idea that utilized something I already had in my house. You could use this idea for place settings at a wedding or for the food and activity signage at any shower or party. I simply cut 1.5 inch squares of Kraft chipboard with my paper-cutter and glued ONE end of the clothespins in the center of the squares. You have to leave one end free so you can still open the pin to hold the card. I printed the food labels, gift table sign and activity instructions on regular old card stock from an office supply store and then used my edge cutter to round them out. The whole process took about 1 hour!

Lemon Velvet: The Best (and Most Trashy) Dessert Ever
This has been my birthday dessert ever since I was able to express my opinion. So…for a really long time. It is trashy, easy, and quite possibly one of the most delicious things you will ever eat. I’ve tried a fancier version of this with real whipped cream and homemade lemon pudding but it honestly couldn’t hold a candle to my mom’s original recipe.

Quick and Dirty DIY: A Surprise Party Favor
Whether you’re throwing a big surprise party, or just a small birthday dinner, whipping up these masks of the guest-of-honor will make for some unforgettable photos! I happened to have this great photo of my friend, Jeff, from our wedding. I enlarged it in full color on card stock and cut it out with an Exacto blade. Then, I simply taped some bamboo skewers I had from my kitchen onto the back and placed one on each place setting at his birthday dinner party table. It got me thinking…imagine walking into your own surprise party and seeing your shocked expression on 40 other faces…amazing!!

Spruce Up Your Pumpkin Pie!
Whether you make or buy a pumpkin pie for your holiday party, try sprucing it up a little like I did with this beauty. Remember when you’d cut snowflakes out of folded paper in elementary school? That’s all I did, but out of parchment paper instead! I cut, ironed and then laid the snowflake over the baked and cooled pie and dusted it with powdered sugar. I carefully lifted the paper off, revealing a lovely a reverse print. I finished it off with candied walnuts around the edge. Delicious!

A vintage themed party for the holidays takes the pressure off of making elegant, time-consuming food. Retro treats always tend to be quicker and cheaper to make unless, of course, you’re using Gourmet magazine from 1962 instead of something kitschy. We modeled our holiday party on a gem my mom gave me from the 70’s called “Christmas Idea Book”.
