On the First Day of Christmas…PARTY!

I made this silly little Christmas train cake for all the kids at the party! I got so much cute candy cargo at Dylan's Candy Bar.

I made this silly little Christmas train cake for all the kids at the party! I got so much cute candy cargo at Dylan’s Candy Bar.

It’s that time of year again and I am SO excited for our upcoming Christmas party in a few weeks.   We usually have anywhere from 40 to 60 people come by our party every year, so this post is mostly about how to feed and water a crowd without going completely insane.  My photos from last year are seriously lacking in number and quality, but hopefully you can get the gist anyway! Finally, Our Own Baby Quilt!

IMG_7836After making three community baby quilts this year, I was so happy to finally be able to make our own baby quilt.  IMG_7845I decided on a chevron strippy pattern because of how many adorable vintage and new prints I had leftover from all of the other quilts, and the chevron is simple and modern looking no matter how many different prints you use.   IMG_7837I backed the quilt with a navy and red woven ikat dot print and bound it with navy cotton chambray.  The backing and the binding are really what help to make it look modern and cool.    Here’s how I pieced the strips!  Continue reading

Santa’s Coming!

Flying Bear from Mt. Royal Mint

(I’ll be peppering all of my posts this month with my favorite things to buy this holiday season!  Click on the image to buy it yourself)

It’s officially December, so it’s time to ask yourself, “How far behind am I?”

Every year, you have a choice.  Embrace the crazy and learn to absolutely love it or complain for 2 months straight and make everyone around you miserable.  If you know me at all, you know that I LOVE IT and I have some ways to make things a little easier for you this month.   Do these three essential things (after the jump) this weekend and I’ll have more fun stuff throughout the month! Herb Saver

Use a permanent marker to turn one of your ice trays into a herb freezer so you never waste your harvest!   After you pluck and wash each herb, just pop them into the wells of the tray and freeze.  I add a little water to each full segment because I love the perfect little block that comes out, but you really don’t need to.    Next time you make a sauce, soup or dip, just pop one out and stir it in!

Puerto Rico Roundup

Raices Fountain

Jeff and I just got back from our vacation in Puerto Rico, and besides a few minor mishaps due to weather and sunburn, we had an incredible time.  Visually, it’s an inspiring place, with the juxtaposition of old and new everywhere.   The colorful Spanish colonial architecture peeking out above the crumbling stone fortress surrounding Old San Juan never fails to stop you in your tracks.  The people are warm and helpful and the food was dream worthy.   To top it all off, it is very, very cheap.   Here are few of our favorites things from the trip and a recipe for a mojito that I’ll be drinking all summer (or until our many bottles of rum are gone).  Continue reading
