As Jeff and I settle into our new swanky baby-friendly apartment, I wanted to take a moment to remember everything that happened in our DIY garage loft that made me start this blog in the first place. So…here’s a little trip down memory lane…How It All Started, The Next Step, The Step After That, Getting Closer, One Last Disaster, Or So We Thought…, and The Moment You’ve All Been Waiting For.

Finally, Our Own Baby Quilt!
After making three community baby quilts this year, I was so happy to finally be able to make our own baby quilt.
I decided on a chevron strippy pattern because of how many adorable vintage and new prints I had leftover from all of the other quilts, and the chevron is simple and modern looking no matter how many different prints you use.
I backed the quilt with a navy and red woven ikat dot print and bound it with navy cotton chambray. The backing and the binding are really what help to make it look modern and cool. Here’s how I pieced the strips! Continue reading

Heirloom Wedding Book

I just finished turning the photographic fabric panels and muslin from one of my best friend’s chuppah into a hardcover book for them to have forever. Let me begin by saying this gorgeous wedding book wasn’t my idea, I was merely the craftsman in this post, but I always love sharing a beautiful idea. As you can see from the photos, Sarah and Ryan’s chuppah was a stunning combination of branches, unbleached cotton muslin and white fabric panels printed with photos of their story, from their ancestors to their childhoods to their own new family together. You could certainly make a quilt out of the panels as a keepsake, but I loved the book idea because it will last a lot longer. Continue reading

Chocolate Pecan Shortbread Ducks
My husband and I whipped up these shortbread ducks one night when we both needed something sweet but didn’t want a lot of fuss or dishes to do. They are super simple and can be made last minute with just a few ingredients from the pantry! Continue reading

(Another) Adorable Community Baby Quilt!
Last year, I threw two baby showers where the guests collectively made adorable baby quilts to give to the couple as a gift. After I posted about them, I was contacted by an expecting mom to help her put together a similar quilt for her baby. She picked the participants and assigned a fruit or vegetable to each person. I mailed each person cute fabric pieces, a white background square, straight pins and instructions with return postage.
They mailed their block back to me, pinned together and all I had to do was stitch them down and embroider the name of the fruit or veggie! I love this quilt even more than the ones from last year because we didn’t allow fabric pens or paint which made the final product cleaner and more professional looking. SO cute! Continue reading

DIY Modern Unisex Nursery
My bestie, Jeff Hinchee, and I were whisked away to San Francisco for a long weekend to help our pal Merav with her new house. Over about 4 days, we tackled three major projects in her daughter’s nursery that completely transformed it into a perfectly playful modern space. While Merav and Jeff sanded and painted an oak dresser we found on Craigslist, I put a stencil Merav had meant to use years back finally to good use and then we finished the room off with some molding and chalkboard paint as a canvas for Dor to express herself later on. Obviously, as you can tell from the photos, the room still needs a lot of TLC, but I think it’s a great backdrop for Merav and Dor to work with!

It’s My Birthday…Time for Lemon Velvet!
Time for my 2nd annual Lemon Velvet recipe post! This has been my birthday dessert ever since I was able to express my opinion. So…for a really long time. It is trashy, easy, and quite possibly one of the most delicious things you will ever eat. I’ve tried a fancier version of this with real whipped cream and homemade lemon pudding but it honestly couldn’t hold a candle to my mom’s original recipe.

DIY Stuffed Animals: How I Made Two Awesome Dragons
My nephews asked sweetly if I could make them stuffed dragons with their names on them, adding even more sweetly that “they would make REALLY good Christmas presents… if I needed any ideas or anything”. I told them I’d think about it, but what I didn’t tell them was that I had never actually made a stuffed ANYTHING, and that I wasn’t really sure I knew how. This post is less about the specifics of the dragons themselves, and more about how I patterned them and how you could use the same techniques to pattern any animal! Continue reading
