On the 4th Day of Christmas…Give Cookies!

IMG_0434I’ve never used my mom’s ceramic cookie stamps and I’ve been dying to for years.  I decided to make sugar cookies for my son’s therapy school teachers and thought the stamps would be perfect for banging out a large quantity of simple but gorgeous cookies.  At the last second, I thought it might be pretty to dry brush some gel food coloring over the larger designs and they turned out great!   These only took about 2 hours total to make, so they are perfect for a last-minute gift or for making in large quantities. On the 3rd Day of Christmas…Bake!

IMG_0433Is there anything more wonderful than bread smeared with butter straight out of the oven?   No.  Not really.  This nutty and fruity cinnamon swirl bread is my favorite bread to make around the holidays.  It combines everything delicious into one loaf; cinnamon, sugar, nuts and dried berries swirled into a soft, squishy and ever so slightly chewy white bread.  Don’t be scared of baking bread!  I know it can be daunting, so I’ve broken it down with photos to help make it fool-proof.  Continue reading

Time for Pumpkin Pie!

IMG_7628Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away!  Here’s a photo of my pumpkin pie from last year.  I always use the rolled Pillsbury pie crusts for cutting out decorations because they are evenly rolled and hold up nicely to intricate cutting, but I like a thicker, homemade crust for the base of the pie.   Click through for the recipe! (Three) Rustic Wedding Cakes

The largest cake was a yellow cake with salted caramel buttercream. It had two tiers and an adorable owl topper.

When your little brother and his fiancée ask you and your dad to make their wedding cake, you say “of course”, but when they ask if you can make THREE, you choke a little, then smile and still say “of course”.   They insisted that they wanted something simple and rustic, but when you have to make cake for 150 people in a rented home kitchen, things will always get a little interesting.   We had made three cakes for our wedding as well with only a few hitches, but we rented an industrial refrigerator for them and bought vanilla buttercream instead of making it ourselves (a huge time and money saver!).  These two crazy kooks wanted flavored buttercreams and one carrot cake, so everything was made from scratch in many, many batches. Backyard California Wedding

Close up of the ceremony arch. A wild assortment of flowers including protea, eucalyptus, and clover.

Last summer, I tried my hand at professional party planning for a few friends who were getting hitched and the end result was just lovely.  They wanted something very small and casual, with an emphasis on great food and lots of booze.  Since it was only about 50 people, they asked me if I could handle it all, from planning to catering to flowers…so basically, it was my dream come true!  While we did do our own wedding, it’s definitely more fun to be the person on the outside making everything perfect for someone else.  More photos of the food and flowers after the jump. It’s My Birthday…Time for Lemon Velvet!

Time for my 2nd annual Lemon Velvet recipe post!  This has been my birthday dessert ever since I was able to express my opinion.  So…for a really long time.   It is trashy, easy, and quite possibly one of the most delicious things you will ever eat.  I’ve tried a fancier version of this with real whipped cream and homemade lemon pudding but it honestly couldn’t hold a candle to my mom’s original recipe.

Grandma’s Peach Pie

My grandmother was “famous” for three desserts; strawberry rhubarb pie, peach pie and rice pudding.  I’m not sure she ever made anything other than these three things, but boy, oh boy were they fantastic!   Peaches are delicious and cheap right now, so get to the store and bake this perfect pie this weekend.  Continue reading
