On the 2nd Day of Christmas…Send Cards!

christmascard2011Don’t you just love getting holiday cards in the mail?   I know people are always scrambling to get them out every year, but they are much appreciated…so keep it up or start a new tradition!  Tiny Prints has gorgeous designs that are super easy to use online, so there’s no excuse, really.   Every year, Jeff and I come up with a fake Christmas album as our holiday card and while I think some of our family members might be a little confused by them, we know how much they all look forward to seeing what we come up each year.    If I leave nothing else behind in this world, I love thinking that these weird cards could be floating around out there for many years to come! On the First Day of Christmas…PARTY!

I made this silly little Christmas train cake for all the kids at the party! I got so much cute candy cargo at Dylan's Candy Bar.

I made this silly little Christmas train cake for all the kids at the party! I got so much cute candy cargo at Dylan’s Candy Bar.

It’s that time of year again and I am SO excited for our upcoming Christmas party in a few weeks.   We usually have anywhere from 40 to 60 people come by our party every year, so this post is mostly about how to feed and water a crowd without going completely insane.  My photos from last year are seriously lacking in number and quality, but hopefully you can get the gist anyway! Cheeky Modern Baby Shower for a Girl

IMG_0076I jumped on the opportunity to throw my friend’s baby shower when I found out it was a girl.  I usually strive for unisex in all things baby until their preference is obvious, but honestly, I wanted to tackle this girly party because I love a good challenge!   I break out in an itchy rash whenever I see the “girl” aisle in the toy store even though I totally loved it as a kid.  Now that I’m a parent, I’m definitely more sensitive to the gender specific stuff.   Rather than give into the unisex themes, I thought it would be more fun to go straight at the stereotype with a tongue-in-cheek uber-girly party with all kitschy vintage teenage girl details.  Think pink foam hair rollers, 60’s prom dresses, pleather diaries with locks…you get the idea.  Since my friend is a fellow North Carolinian , the theme also accidentally took on a 60’s Southern belle vibe! Modern Watercolor Wedding Invitations

12032779_10101924610297581_801317766432908708_oBack in March, I made my brother’s wedding invitations and they’re a great example of professional looking invitations that you can achieve with a home printer.   Since watercolor washes and hand lettering are very hot right now, I decided to incorporate their wedding colors and greenery into something very modern and simple using both of those trends. (Three) Rustic Wedding Cakes

The largest cake was a yellow cake with salted caramel buttercream. It had two tiers and an adorable owl topper.

The largest cake was a yellow cake with salted caramel buttercream. It had two tiers and an adorable owl topper.

When your little brother and his fiancée ask you and your dad to make their wedding cake, you say “of course”, but when they ask if you can make THREE, you choke a little, then smile and still say “of course”.   They insisted that they wanted something simple and rustic, but when you have to make cake for 150 people in a rented home kitchen, things will always get a little interesting.   We had made three cakes for our wedding as well with only a few hitches, but we rented an industrial refrigerator for them and bought vanilla buttercream instead of making it ourselves (a huge time and money saver!).  These two crazy kooks wanted flavored buttercreams and one carrot cake, so everything was made from scratch in many, many batches. Close up of the ceremony arch. A wild assortment of flowers including protea, eucalyptus, and clover.

Last summer, I tried my hand at professional party planning for a few friends who were getting hitched and the end result was just lovely.  They wanted something very small and casual, with an emphasis on great food and lots of booze.  Since it was only about 50 people, they asked me if I could handle it all, from planning to catering to flowers…so basically, it was my dream come true!  While we did do our own wedding, it’s definitely more fun to be the person on the outside making everything perfect for someone else.  More photos of the food and flowers after the jump. Keep it Simple: Toddler Birthday Parties

G's first birthday!

G’s first birthday!

It’s officially been over a year since I last wrote so I thought the best new post would be George’s first AND second birthday parties, both simple (ish) and super unfussy.   But first, let me quickly explain where I’ve been!

We always suspected something might be a little off with G, so we have spent the last year in and out of many doctor’s offices, hospitals and early intervention therapies.  In the end, we discovered that he has a super rare chromosome disorder, so our future has a lot more therapists, doctors and appointments in it than the average family, but overall he’s doing great.

I plan on blogging elsewhere about everything I’m learning in that world, but for now, I’m back to sharing all of my projects, parties and delicious food with you!   More about these two parties after the jump.  Continue reading

I don’t know about you, but I love Pinterest.   LOVE IT.   But for a while there, I think I was just creating an internet-only beautiful life that I wasn’t fully living.   Virtual life no longer!  I’m cooking the recipes, crafting the crafts and using the inspiration boards for my own decor.  Here’s what I tried out for my latest party!
